CANORA – Led by three gold medals each from Karter Shukin (bantam boys), Courtlyn Heshka (bantam girls) and Kasen Heshka (intermediate boys), the Canora Composite School track-and-field team had a rewarding and productive day at pre-districts in Yorkton on May 12.
Coached by Thomas Lowes and Leona Kitchen, the squad has been gaining momentum after a slow start to the season.
“The snow didn't melt off the track until April 30. This only gave our students five practices before they needed to compete,” said the coaches. “But our students rose to the challenge and did their best to make use of the practice time we had.
“We were fortunate enough to have a beautiful sunny day to compete at pre-districts. Canora was the host school, so it took many people from our school community to help out. Our SRC [student representative council] crew ran the canteen and eight other non-participating students offered to volunteer their day to work at javelin and high jump. These extra students were a great help and we couldn't have pulled the day off without them.”
The top two finishers in each event automatically qualify for districts. Canora had 24 student/athletes who made the grade.
