WAKAW — Summer temperatures make the opening of registration for swimming lessons a welcome distraction.
The Cudworth swimming pool will be taking registrations for summer swimming lessons on June 5 from 4-7 p.m. and on June 6 from 9 a.m. to noon at the pool, located at 401-King St. in Cudworth. No payments are required at the time of registration; payment is required on the first day of lessons. Registration for lessons is first come/first served. Registrations received over Facebook Messenger will be checked at the end of each day only.
Registration for swimming lessons at Rosthern’s Valley Aquatic Centre opened on May 29 at noon via an online form. Staff will be available to answer questions and provide general assistance over the phone, but they strongly encourage registering online. Registration for private lessons at VAC is also available, and they are held on Saturday mornings beginning on June 6 and on Sunday mornings beginning July 5. Any questions can be directed to the Valley Aquatic Centre at VAC@rosthern.com or by calling 306-232-5044.
Lessons at both pools follow the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program, and group lessons in both Cudworth and Rosthern are offered for Parent & Tot, Preschool, and Swimmer levels, as well as the Swim Patrol levels.
The Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program includes five modules. These modules are: Parent & Tot for parents and children up to three years of age, Preschool 1-5 for children three to five years, Swimmer 1-6 for children six years and older, Adult Swimmer for people over 16 years, and Fitness Swimmer for people of any age who want to improve their overall physical fitness.
Also a part of the Lifesaving Society’s program offerings is the Canadian Swim Patrol. The Canadian Swim Patrol program serves as the pathway to becoming a lifeguard. It offers enhanced training for individuals who are ready to progress beyond basic swim lessons. The Swim Patrol consists of three levels: Rookie, Ranger, and Star. These levels help participants improve their swimming strokes and provide a solid skill foundation that prepares them for success in the Society’s Bronze medal awards.
The Cudworth pool staff offer lessons three times over the summer months. Each session runs for two weeks, with each lesson running for half an hour (45 minutes for upper levels). Set 1 runs from July 6 – 17, Set 2 runs from July 20 – 31, and Set 3 runs from Aug. 3 – 14. During each of those sessions, times are available for those wanting private lessons.
Rosthern’s Valley Aquatic Centre offers lessons in one-week sessions, with two half-hour lessons/day. Set 1 runs from June 29 to July 3, Set 2 runs from July 6 to 10, Set 3 runs from July 13 to 17, Set r runs from July 20 to 24, Set 5 runs from July 27 to 31, Set 6 runs from Aug. 4 to 8, Set 7 runs from Aug. 10 to 14, and Set 9 runs from Aug. 17 to 21.
Those who have taken lessons previously, following the Red Cross program, can register in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program.
