PELLY — The GX94 crew travelled to Pelly for Week 5 of the popular Supper in the Field contest, leaving only one week remaining in this summer's competition.
Local farmer Tiffany Brown was named this week's winner. She celebrated the win right in her yard alongside her boyfriend, Lorne.
Brown has spent nearly three decades managing the land she calls home. "It was my late husband's family farm and I've taken it over now," Brown said. "I've been farming it for 27 years already."
While the farm used to produce more grain, Brown has transitioned the operation to focus primarily on hay production to feed her growing cattle herd. She currently runs 30 head of beef cattle, with plans to expand further into Shorthorn cattle genetics.
Recent weather has provided a strong boost to her operation. "With all the rain, the pastures are great," Brown said. When her cattle are ready for market, she transports them south to the Heartland Livestock Services facility in Yorkton.
Lorne, who grew up in town rather than on a farm, brings a unique set of skills to the partnership. He has worked as a butcher for 24 years and currently operates out of a shop in Preeceville.
The couple has major plans to combine their agricultural and meat-cutting expertise directly on the property. "We are hoping to get a little butcher place set up here and start butchering some of our own animals," Lorne shared, highlighting a joint goal to establish a local "farm-to-fork" business.
Both Brown and Lorne had entered the radio contest, but it was Brown's name that was drawn. She admitted she almost missed the phone call.
"The [caller ID] just said Yorkton," Brown laughed. "Lots of times I don't answer calls when I don't know, but yeah, I was hoping."
Her excitement doubled when she realized she would not have to cook. The couple expressed gratitude for the evening, calling the food "very good" and the accompanying prize package "awesome."
The event was made possible through the support of many local business sponsors.
The GX94 Supper in the Field contest will wrap up next week with its sixth and final broadcast of the season.
