Over ten years after the Gravity Falls finale aired, I finally completed one of my all-time favourite series from childhood. Let’s rewind to the mid-2010s, when Gravity Falls season 1 had just wrapped up and the hype for season 2 was REAL. I was beyond excited for more! But then, everything changed. Disney Channel officially launched in Canada, ruining my entire TV lineup. Family Channel lost the rights to Disney’s shows, and Gravity Falls was moved to Disney XD (a premium add-on channel that cost an extra $5 a month, which wasn’t in the budget). Just like that, season 2 slipped out of reach, and the mysteries of Gravity Falls like “who was the author of the journals?” “what is the big machine in the basement for?” “are we going to get more music from Sev’ral Timez?”, stayed a mystery to me.
Fast-forward to now, and streaming has finally given me a second chance. When I saw Gravity Falls pop up on Disney+, I couldn’t believe it! Watching the series from start to finish, I was struck by just how many celebrity voices I never noticed as a kid, and how the show’s quirky charm feels even more special now. Gravity Falls stands out from the usual Disney lineup with its weird, witty humour, mysterious plotlines, and unique characters. The multi-part finale, “Weirdmageddon”, was just as wild and unpredictable as its name suggests, wrapping up the story with a blend of chaos and closure that felt like the perfect sendoff for the series.
Reaching the end after all these years brought a wave of nostalgia and satisfaction, finally getting to discover what was lost to the great Disney Channel and Disney XD migration. Now, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Disney+ brings back other favourites I had back in the day like Aaron Stone and I’m in the Band, so more “lost” shows can get the second chance they deserve. For now, I’m just grateful that Gravity Falls got the ending it deserved, and that I finally got to see it.
You can stream all seasons of Gravity Falls on Disney+. The entirety of season 1 is on YouTube for free with ads.
