SASKATCHEWAN — The massive amounts of rainfall due to unstable weather cells have destroyed Saskatchewan Highways. Many highways currently have water over them or have large sinkholes carving the highway roadway away.
Highway 49 west of Norquay, between Pelly and Norquay, has been closed due to a large sinkhole that unfortunately caught a motorist off guard in the early morning hours of June 29.
Highway 49 between Lintlaw and Kelvington has water over the road.
Many other roads across Saskatchewan are being affected. Motorists are encouraged by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways to plan and pay attention to your surroundings.
“We will be addressing roadways that are problem areas," said Sean Wilson, Minister of Sask Builds and Procurement and MLA for the Canora-Pelly constituency. “In my 45 years, I have never seen it this bad. Nothing can be done until the water goes down. Once it does, we can take a good look at replacing culverts, updating systems with bigger culverts, and have the maintenance department take on the responsibility of repairing damaged roadways. I urge patience at this time and most people are very understanding,” he said.
The communities of Norquay, Pelly, Kamsack and Canora have also experienced major flooding.
