Have you ever noticed how superstitions seem to become a bigger part of life as you get older? I know they have for me. Not with everything, but definitely when it comes to hockey.
As the dad of a goalie, I think the hockey superstitions might be even stronger. If my son has a great game or picks up a shutout, you can bet I’m not changing a thing before the next game. I’ll wear the same hat, follow the same routine, and even do the same little things leading up to puck drop. My son is the exact same way. If a certain pre-game meal seemed to work last time, that’s what’s on the menu again.
Do any of these routines actually have an impact on the game? Probably not. But somehow they make our brains feel a little better. It’s almost like you don’t want to tempt fate by changing something that’s been working.
The funniest part is that we’re both in on it. There have been times when I’m getting ready to head out the door and my son will stop me and ask, “Are you wearing the same hat you had on when we won last game?” If the answer is no, I might be making a quick trip back to the closet!
I know it sounds a little ridiculous, but I also know we’re not alone. Hockey players are famous for their superstitions. Whether it’s the same meal, the same tape job on their stick, the same socks, or always putting equipment on in the same order, routines become part of the game.
Maybe it’s because hockey is such a mental sport. Anything that helps you feel confident and comfortable is worth sticking with, even if deep down you know it probably isn’t the reason the puck stayed out of the net.
So now I’m curious… are you superstitious? Maybe it’s in sports, maybe it’s buying lottery tickets, or maybe you refuse to walk under a ladder or open an umbrella indoors.
I’d love to hear what your superstitions are. Chances are, they’re not any stranger than a goalie dad making sure he wears the “winning hat” one more time!
