Supergirl, the second film in the James Gunn DC Universe, hit theaters a couple of weeks ago, and I finally caught a screening at the IMAX in Regina. As a longtime fan of the TV series Supergirl starring Melissa Benoist (I even dressed up as her for multiple Halloweens), I was curious to see how this new one would shape up. After Supergirl’s cameo at the end of the recent Superman movie, it was clear this Supergirl was no carbon copy of her cousin, and I went into the theater with high hopes.
I really wanted to like it but unfortunately, the film didn’t quite deliver. The story was just fine. Sometimes reminding me of both Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Love and Thunder, with a hint of the old DCEU thrown in. Still, there were some bright spots! The flashbacks of Kara Zor-El before she came to Earth were definitely compelling, and Superman’s appearances provided some much-needed humour. The cast and crew clearly put in a lot of effort and gave it their all, acting their butts off and making sure that the costumes, sets, and visuals still stood out.
What seemed missing was James Gunn. As the creator and lead of the new DC Universe, he’s had a hand in writing every project so far, but with Supergirl, he’s only credited as a producer. The witty, bright but snarky charm wasn’t there like it is in his other projects. While Supergirl has its moments and is worth a watch, it doesn’t have the rewatchability that it should. I’m hoping that if Supergirl returns to the big screen solo again, she’ll come back stronger and bring justice to the character just like the MCU did with Thor: Ragnarok.
