CANORA – For a team that had never played in an actual game together, members of the 15U Canora Reds provincial baseball team looked like long-time teammates as they went undefeated through the min- tournament held in Canora on July 12. The tournament also involved the Yorkton Cardinals and the Wynyard Blues.
Each team played two games, one against each of the other teams. The Reds won both games, Yorkton had a win and a loss, and Wynyard lost twice.
In addition to Canora players, the Reds have also added players from teams in Norquay, Foam Lake and Langenburg for provincials.
Reds coach Dayne Babchishin said this was the first game action for the Reds but they “have been working very hard three days a week at practice.”
With wins of 19-9 over Yorkton, and 15-10 over Wynyard, Babchishin said, “The tournament was a great opportunity to bring together the players as a team. Playing in a game environment and having success will be a great momentum boost for the team.”
Babchishin said the players on the team have shown that they are capable of being strong competitors at provincials, scheduled for Eston from July 17-19
“This year’s team has depth in pitching and the players have great baseball sense. The Canora tournament performance was textbook baseball with very few internal errors, meanwhile capitalizing on the opponents.”
The Reds continued their success during the round robin portion of provincials, with three straight wins over Wynyard and a pair of Saskatoon teams to earn first place in their group. But the provincial run for the Reds ended in the playoff semi-final with a loss to Weyburn.
