This week’s SaskToday.ca web poll got me thinking back to when I was a kid. The question is: Where did you learn to swim?
For me, the answer was easy… the lake.
Growing up, Katepwa Lake was only about a 10-minute drive from home, while the closest swimming pool was in Melville, about half an hour away. When summer rolled around, the lake was where everyone seemed to end up. Whether it was spending the afternoon on the beach, cooling off after a hot day, or just hanging out with family, that’s where so many summer memories were made.
I never took formal swimming lessons. My uncle was the one who taught me. Now, before you picture him tossing me into the deep end, don’t worry… that’s just the old joke! He was patient, showed me the basics, and before long I was swimming around like every other kid enjoying summer at the lake.
There is one thing I definitely don’t miss, though… the seaweed.
It always seemed like the later the summer got, the greener the water became. Even today, if I’m swimming somewhere and something brushes against my leg or foot that I can’t see, I’m instantly wondering what it was! I guess that childhood fear never completely disappeared.
These days, I actually prefer swimming in a pool or even the ocean. There’s just something reassuring about being able to look down and see your feet instead of wondering what’s lurking below the surface.
Now it’s your turn to share your story. Did you learn to swim in a lake, a pool, a river, or somewhere else? We’d love to hear your memories.
