Just finished watching Jerry & Marge Go Large, which I’d been wanting to watch since I saw the trailer a few years ago. The story follows Jerry and Marge Selbee, played by Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening respectively, who discover a loophole in the lottery game Winfall that means winning money every time they play. Instead of keeping the secret to themselves, they get their friends and family to join in, pooling their winnings to revitalize their small town. The plot thickens when a group of elite college students stumble onto the same scheme, throwing in a rivalry of generations to the mix.
And the best part? It’s a true story. Jerry and Marge Selbee really did find a legal way to beat the odds and used their lottery windfall to help their community. They really did form a company to invest their winnings back into the town with their friends and family, making the story not just about luck, but the goodness and kindness of people. It’s refreshing!
Seeing Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening as a retired couple takes some getting used to, I always think of them as perpetually in their 40s but both of them are retirement age now. Their performances bring warmth and authenticity to the characters, turns out they really did spend time with the real Jerry & Marge to make sure they did justice to the two when playing the couple on screen. Jerry & Marge Go Large is just a cozy, uplifting movie. If you’re in the mood for a feel-good film that has some funny moments too, make sure you give this one a watch.
