A first-quarter Saskatchewan Roughriders touchdown was negated by a controversial penalty call that resulted in an injury to a member of the Ottawa Redblacks in Friday’s game.
Riders’ Nick Wiebe blocked a punt deep in Ottawa territory and David Gbenda recovered the loose ball before being pulled into the end zone with 2:24 on the clock.
However, flags were down before Gbenda cross the goal line. Lineman Devin Adams was called for unnecessary roughness on Redblacks long snapper Peter Adjey, despite him having released the ball and being in a position to block.
The touchdown was wiped off the board as Adjey remained down. He eventually left the field with an injury.
“That should not have been a penalty. It should have been a big play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders,” TSN analyst and Canadian Football Hall of Famer Milt Stegall said at halftime on the broadcast.
The Redblacks got the ball back on their own 34-yard line. They scored a touchdown of their own 10 plays later on a one-yard run from Bryson Barnes to take a 6-3 lead, which didn’t change after a missed point-after attempt by Lewis Ward.
