WAKAW — The 2026-27 school year begins for students on September 2, but teachers and the rest of the staff will be back in the building before then. In the Prairie Spirit School Division, the teachers will be officially back at it on Tuesday, Aug. 25, and in Horizon School Division, they are officially back on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
That also means football practices will be starting for the Wakaw Warriors. The official start date established by the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) is Aug. 20. High school volleyball’s start date is Sept. 1, meaning tryouts and practices can start immediately upon students’ return to school.
For students looking for extracurricular community-led activities this upcoming fall and winter, Wakaw Dance Club and Rosthern School of Dance are gearing up for the 2026-27 dance season.
Wakaw Dance Club (WDC) offers HipHop, MiniBop, Tiny Tots, Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Lyrical, ACRO, Contemporary, Musical Theatre, and Large Group. Sept. 8-11 is a ‘try all week.’ Dancers can try every genre for free before locking into specific classes the following week. Classes run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with Friday used as a flex day to facilitate cancelled classes needing rescheduling. Enrollment information can be found on the Club’s Facebook page.
WDC offers a range of dance classes, categorized as both competitive and non-competitive options to cater to different skill levels and interests. The final decision regarding which classes and dancers will participate in competitions rests with the instructors, who will evaluate each dancer's readiness and performance.
For those enrolled in the competitive classes, there is an essential requirement to attend two Foundation classes throughout the year. These Foundation classes are designed to enhance dancers’ skills and will take place monthly on Fridays. Students need to note that these sessions require a separate registration process, which will be made available before each offering. This ensures that all interested dancers have the opportunity to secure their spots in the Foundation classes.
Currently, Rosthern School of Dance has not yet released specific information regarding its class offerings for the upcoming season. However, in July, parents and guardians were invited to complete a pre-registration form to aid the school in planning for fall classes. This pre-registration process enables the dance school to assess the level of interest among students, ensuring that the classes offered align with dancers’ preferences and desires. Additionally, the information gathered from these forms assists in effectively organizing the class schedule.
Those looking for a gymnastics opportunity: fall registration is now open at Valley Gymnastics Centre in Waldheim, with classes starting on Sept. 8 and continuing until Nov. 2. Valley Gymnastics Centre has transitioned to being fully operated by a volunteer, non-profit board. Children as young as three years old can register for an introduction to basic gymnastics skills, while children ages 6 and up can enroll in classes to begin to learn the skills of gymnastics, from the fundamentals to advanced skills, through Gymnastics Canada’s National Skill Development and Evaluation Program, Can-Gym. The Can-Gym program is used as a progress-monitoring tool to ensure that children learn the foundations and skills of gymnastics with proper technique and safety in mind while having fun. It was developed and tested by coaches working with beginner- to advanced recreational gymnasts and with entry-level competitive gymnasts.
