YORKTON — Music fans turned out in large numbers for Yorkton's inaugural Living Skies Music Festival, filling the grandstand to enjoy a lineup featuring local Saskatchewan talent alongside nationally recognized acts.
The festival brought together performers from across the country, including Jess Moskaluke, Econoline Crush, Big Sugar and Regina-based Blue Beach Band, while drawing support from local businesses, community leaders and music fans eager to see a major outdoor music event in Yorkton.
Big Sugar's appearance came despite travel challenges. The band made the trip to Yorkton by vehicle after a flight cancellation, completing a 16-hour drive to make its scheduled performance.
For Blue Beach Band, the festival represented a homecoming of sorts. While now based in Regina, members of the indie rock group have roots in Esterhazy and Langenburg.
"We're very stoked to be playing something kind of in our hometown area," said vocalist and harmonica player Carter Vosper. "It's nice to be back."
The band, which draws inspiration from Canadian artists as well as classic and yacht rock influences, said performing close to home allowed them to share the experience with friends, family and longtime supporters.
Vosper said he hopes the festival helps strengthen the local music scene and inspires more events in the future.
"I hope that it inspires more of these in the future," he said. "I think Yorkton has a lot of untapped music lovers and a music scene that maybe just needs to be brought out of the woodwork."
He also hopes events like the Living Skies Music Festival encourage young people to pursue music themselves.
"Maybe somebody's going to get inspired to start a band in Yorkton," Vosper said. "Hopefully it boosts the scene in general."
The band members credited local music stores, including Fuzztone Music in Yorkton, with helping nurture their own musical interests when they were growing up.
"We've had a couple of young guys come up and say they're starting to play guitar because they've been listening to our music," Vosper added. "That is the most rewarding thing possible."
The festival received strong support from local businesses, including co-presenting sponsors Ffun Motorsports and Harvest Meats.
Fun Fun Motorsports general manager Ben Ward said it was exciting to see the community embrace the inaugural event.
"It's been a great event so far," Ward said. "It's really exciting to bring this event to Yorkton and just see the turnout here."
Ward said sponsors also helped create a comfortable backstage experience for performers, including a dedicated green room trailer and artist hospitality area.
Among the festival's featured performers was Canadian rock band Econoline Crush. Frontman Trevor Hurst said the event marked a return visit to Yorkton after a memorable appearance many years ago.
"I think it was a million years ago," Hurst said. "I played at the high school. It was a Juicy Fruit competition, and I wore a band uniform."
While audiences continue to enjoy the band's well-known hits, Hurst said he is also excited to share newer material, including the song New Gold Magic.
The singer, who works as a registered psychiatric nurse in Manitoba when he is not on tour, said he appreciates the ability to balance music and healthcare.
"I've been very fortunate to find a great niche thing where I can help people during the week and then, if we have to go on tour, I get vacation time," he said.
Yorkton city councillor Stephanie Ortynsky said she was pleased to see residents gathering at the grandstand for the festival.
"It's great to be out and enjoy the outdoors and our beautiful grandstands," she said.
Ortynsky added that Saskatchewan country star Jess Moskaluke was among the performers she was most looking forward to seeing.
"She was the one I was looking forward to, and she delivered," she said.
The strong attendance and positive response from artists, sponsors and concertgoers alike suggest the Living Skies Music Festival has made a successful debut and could become a fixture on Yorkton's summer entertainment calendar.
