PREECEVILLE — Children from six to 12 years old are invited to come on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the months of July and August for some summer fun that will feature fun games, snacks and crafts.
A different theme is featured each week with fun games, snacks and crafts. The Preeceville Rec Board is sponsoring the event, which is being held at the Preeceville Community Legion Hall. The program kicked off on July 14 and runs until the end of August.
The program featured a Wild About Wildlife theme on Aug. 11 with guest speaker and trapper Floyd Hendrickson of Margo. The fun day also featured fun games matching animals and their tracks, a fun animal craft and snacks.
Hendrickson is involved in the Saskatchewan Trappers Association and has been trapping for more than 51 years. He brought 22 different animal pelts and explained where each animal lives. He also brought a display of numerous different types of traps and snares used to trap animals. He explained the most popular types of animals that are hunted in Saskatchewan and the local area.
“I got involved in trapping at an early age, and ever since, it has been a passion of mine,” said Hendrickson. “I have done other things like farming and school bus driving, but I have always liked the trapping industry. In 1996, I retired but am still active in trapping. I am also a certified trapping course instructor for Saskatchewan. I also do a lot of depredation work where I help trap animals that become a threat to livestock and humans. In the trapping industry over the years, pelts used to be worth a lot of money, but nowadays the bottom has fallen out and they are not worth as much as they used to be. The skunk is a profitable little animal, with its scent glands going for a good amount of money,” he stated.
Crystal Draper, recreation director, and Sarah Masko and Anebeth Bartel, the Town of Preeceville summer students, oversee the weekly event.
