CANORA – After the Canora Lions Club was officially re-established during a June meeting, the Lions followed up with an organizational meeting at the Canora Curling Rink on Aug. 10.
Marianne Kramchynsky of the Rosthern Lions Club, who is also a past district governor and past council chair, called the meeting to order.
“It’s so nice to see a new Lions club getting started,” said Kramchynsky. Joined at the meeting by Bernie Kramchynsky (Rosthern Lions) and Brian Starkell (Nipawin Lions, District 5SKN Governor), she added, “We want to give you all the support you need to get off on the right foot.”
Kramchynsky then opened the floor for nominations.
Elected to the executive for the Canora Lions Club for the year ending July 1, 2017, were:
Lisa Harper (president); Tania McLeod (vice-president), Catherine Holt (secretary) and Amanda Daku (treasurer). Ernie Gazdewich was elected as the tail twister, a position which was explained further by Kramchynsky.
“The tail twister is responsible for making Lions meetings fun, while also coming up with clever and creative ways to bring in money for the club. For example, you could ask everyone to dress a certain way for the next meeting. Anyone who fails to do so could be required to pay a fine.”
She reminded the members in attendance that even thought the election of the executive has been completed, their work is just starting.
“Recruitment of new members is important, but retaining existing members is just as important. Many hands make light work.
“This is now your club. You decide how to proceed from here on, including which service projects you would like to pursue.”
Kramchynsky encouraged the club to always have a copy of the Lions Code of Ethics handy, which includes:
• To show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service.
• To seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part.
• To remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another's; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself.
• Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself.
• To hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given.
• Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state and my community, and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act and deed. To give them freely of my time, labor, and means.
• To aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy.
• To be careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.
The next meeting of the Canora Lions Club was set for Sept. 28.
