REGINA — The Government of Saskatchewan is advising the public to be on alert for scam text messages that claim recipients have an outstanding traffic citation.
These fraudulent texts falsely identify themselves as coming from the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan and direct individuals to a webpage to submit payment online.
These messages are illegitimate. The government does not conduct fine payments through text messages and does not send out alerts regarding overdue fines by text.
If you receive a text message from a scammer, you are encouraged to keep the following tips in mind:
- Do not click any links.
- Don't submit any payment details or personal information.
- Do not reply.
- Block the phone number immediately.
- Keep records of the texts.
If you are unsure of the legitimacy of a text message or believe you are the victim of fraud, please contact your local police or Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachment.
