CANORA, SASK.- It was a busy week in and around Canora with a little something for just about everyone.
Canora in Bloom took place from Aug. 7-15, culminating with the fun of the Canora Street Festival on Aug. 15, all hosted by the Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee.
“Many of the visitors enjoy coming back to their hometown, some come back for high school reunions. People like to see old friends and enjoy our small town atmosphere, which Canora is well known for,” said Brandi Zavislak, committee member and community development officer.
“Attendance was good at most events during the week and on the weekend, not so good at others with all the other events going on at the same time.”
The week began with community-wide garage sales from Aug. 7-9, where business appeared to be brisk on a number of yards.

Off the Rails Canteen at the Canora Golf Club was open daily throughout the week and included fun nights, happy hour specials, and even entry to a putting challenge. The Perogy Lunch went on Monday, the Canora-Pelly NDP Barbecue on Wednesday, Legion Lunch on Friday, plus a wide variety of food vendors at the Street Festival on Saturday.
Always drawing a crowd, Wally and Mary Huebert welcomed visitors to their acreage for train rides as well as a craft mini-market.
The Street Festival itself included the popular Good Spirit Petting Zoo, the Canora Cobras senior hockey team bouncy castle, and many street vendors with a variety of interesting wares.
Music acts performing throughout the day included the Zayshley’s of Yorkton, Troy MacNaughton of Canora, and former Canora resident Melissa Spelchen.
Zavislak said the weather was good for most of the week, which is always a concern. Brief showers on Friday caused very few problems, and even helped cool things down a bit.
“Our committee is focused on the community and enjoys putting on these events, our members work hard to do all the organizing,” said Zavislak, adding that funds raised at events like this will go to the committee’s latest project, a dog park and rest stop area.
“This is something that the community has wanted for years. Right now work is being done on the sitting area.”
Previous projects funded by the Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee included the outdoor stage at King George Park and entrance signs on the north and south end of town.
