YORKTON, Sask. — Yorkton was among several Saskatchewan communities soaked by heavy rainfall Aug. 30, as a weather system moved across central and southern parts of the province, bringing thunderstorms, hail and a confirmed tornado near Maryfield in the southeast, as well as other confirmed tornadoes across the Manitoba border.
Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Terry Lang said Yorkton received about 25 millimetres of rain, while amounts varied considerably elsewhere across the province.
The most significant rainfall reported was near Maryfield, southeast of Regina, where 71.4 millimetres fell. The area was also the site of a tornado.
“I think it was confirmed to have touched down,” Lang said. “We haven't seen any reports of any damage, but there should be a survey team that comes along and tries to find any damage.”
Lang said much of central and southern Saskatchewan received rain, while the southeast corner of the province experienced more severe conditions, including thunderstorms and reports of hail.
“It was sort of all over the place,” he said of rainfall totals across Saskatchewan.
Rainfall amounts varied across the province. Regina recorded reports of up to 42 millimetres in some areas of the city, while nearby Davin received 36 millimetres. Saskatoon received about 26 millimetres.
In Regina, the heavy rain led to localized flooding in some low-lying areas.
“Most of the flooding happened in the underpasses,” Lang said.
Water could also be seen running across Highway 9 north of the Qu'Appelle Valley near Whitewood during the storm as heavy rain moved through the area.
The system delivered much-needed moisture to some areas, but its effects ranged from steady rainfall in many communities to severe thunderstorms and tornadic activity in the southeast.
