One of my favourite movies of all time is Easy A starring Emma Stone. One of the best comedies that came out of the 2010s and still holds up today. I’ve easily watched it at least 20 times, if not more! One of the aspects of the story is that the main character Olive starts wearing a red letter “A” on her chest just like in the book The Scarlet Letter, which is a main inspiration of the story but also in the story. Apparently, it’s a book always taught in schools. I’d never read it though, so I thought better late than never.
I have to say, I didn’t like it. I know it’s considered a classic, and was most likely groundbreaking for its time, but compared to the books and stories we have nowadays this one just wasn’t that great. It was a bit of a slog to get through, as it was in Old English, but my main concern of this story is that everything could have been resolved if *spoiler alert* minister Dimmesdale would’ve just come forward as the father. Legit everything could’ve been wrapped up in like 2 chapters. And might I add in defense of “adulterer” Hester Prynne, she thought her husband was lost at sea, so basically dead. The responsibility is fully on the minister.
Reading a book is never a bad idea, and while The Scarlet Letter wasn’t a favourite for me, I’m still glad I read it. I get why a lot of people sometimes give up on reading a book and it most likely would have saved me some time if I had, but your girl is a completionist, so I’ll stubbornly trudge through it regardless as I have to know how it all ends. I think my next read will definitely be something in modern English, though.
