PREECEVILLE, Sask. — Preeceville School's dream of new playground equipment became a reality days before the first day of school. A project that was started in 2022 by SRC members finally saw all the pieces come together, with the work of many volunteers helping install the equipment over the week of Aug. 24-28.
In the beginning, a large $10,000 bequeathed donation from the Harry Toy estate helped launch the idea to start fundraising efforts to replace the old wooden structure that had been taken down due to safety issues. The school’s fundraising efforts included trade shows, Chase the Ace, community donations and the Crossroads Credit Union initiative. The school secured $170,000 in funds to be able to realize its dream.
“Words are not enough to express our gratitude for all the volunteers who took the time out of their day to help shovel, dig holes, rake and put together all the playground pieces. Andrew Beaten from Moose Jaw was the safety supervisor who was on site during the entire process,” said Leslea Hanson, vice-principal.
Kenton and Ally Hull were key volunteers who saw the project from beginning to end. Fibre wood chips were spread on the bottom as a safety feature.
The three-part set of playground equipment featured a velocity agility course, a quest obstacle course and a Tetra climbing web.
The school will be hosting a back-to-school barbecue and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the playground on Sept. 17.
