YORKTON, Sask. – As National Legion Week gets underway, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 77 in Yorkton is inviting veterans, members and the public to take part in a week of activities focused on remembrance, community and support for veterans.
National Legion Week runs from Sept. 19 to 25, highlighting the work of Legion branches across Canada and their role in supporting veterans, military members and their families.
The week began Sept. 19 with the installation of the branch's veterans banner. On Sept. 20, Branch 77 held a commemoration service recognizing local veterans and unveiled a new veterans banner.
Activities continue Sept. 21 with a storytelling event at the Legion beginning at 7 p.m., featuring special guests and an opportunity for community members to hear personal stories connected to military service and remembrance.
The schedule also includes a film screening on Sept. 24. The documentary We Were There, presented in partnership with the Yorkton Film Festival, will be shown at the Legion at 7 p.m. Admission is free and attendees will receive complimentary popcorn.
The week wraps up Sept. 25 with a Friday social. The Legion lounge opens at 4 p.m., followed by a meal service at 5 p.m. Veterans and active service members can eat free, while all attendees will have the opportunity to participate in 50/50 draws and meat draws.
In addition to the special events, Branch 77 is offering activities throughout the week. Community members can participate in Facebook bingo by registering through the branch's social media page. Complimentary coffee is also available during office hours from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Legion officials say National Legion Week is an opportunity to showcase the organization's commitment to honouring veterans while strengthening connections within the broader community.
The Royal Canadian Legion encourages residents to stop by the branch during the week to learn more about its programs, meet members and take part in the events celebrating service, remembrance and community.
