MELVILLE, Sask. — The City of Melville will fund a $1,000 Suncrest College entrance scholarship for the coming year, with preference given to a local student.
Council approved the one-year contribution at its Sept. 21 meeting after considering several scholarship options. The city will work with Suncrest College to establish eligibility criteria, with preference for a Melville resident and secondary preference for a student attending the college's Melville campus.
Mayor Joe Kirwan said the scholarship reflects council's desire to invest in local students while maintaining flexibility in future budgets.
According to a council report, Suncrest College allows donors to request broad eligibility criteria, including geographic preference and campus location, while recipient selection is handled through the college's scholarship committee.
Kirwan said council chose to review the scholarship annually rather than make a permanent commitment.
"This will be reviewed annually as part of our budget process instead of making a permanent commitment because council felt that's probably the better way to approach it," he said.
Administration will now work with Suncrest College to finalize the scholarship agreement, including award criteria and payment arrangements. The scholarship must be established before the end of January to be included in the college's annual scholarship program.
