SASKATOON, Sask. — On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) calls for the Government of Canada to ensure, as Section 35 rights holders, Métis children have immediate equitable access to supports through existing federal Child First Initiative frameworks.
The MN–S Government also wants a commitment to work with Canada to develop and implement a Métis-Distinct Child First Initiative.
“Every Indigenous child deserves the opportunity to thrive”, said MN–S Child and Family Services Minister Loretta King said, “Right now, gaps exist for Métis children and youth. It’s our obligation to close them by advancing meaningful and substantive equality when it comes to everything from health and education to groceries and utility bills. Our MN–S government’s ultimate goal is to achieve a distinct, Métis Child First Initiative, but the urgent need for supports leads us to call for action now.”
Through the United Nations Declaration of Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act and corresponding Action Plan, Canada has committed to advancing Metis rights and substantive equality. MN–S is calling on Canada to put those commitments into action.
“This is an opportunity to turn commitments into action for Métis Children – and we are ready to work with Canada to make a Métis Child First Initiative a reality,” said Minister King.
Until there is a Métis-specific approach, the MN–S government asks people to join the call for immediate action for Métis children to be recognized under the terms of existing Child First frameworks. Visit mns.ca/mcfi for more information
