It’s no secret that I like to partake in a K-drama from time to time. What I find so fantastic about Korean dramas is the fact that they’ll usually wrap everything up in one season. No being left on a cliffhanger ever. Okay, not every time, but like 99% of the time you get a nice ending that wraps up the story.
The most recent K-drama I watched, Can This Love Be Translated?, was partially filmed in Canada. The premise is that they’re filming a reality dating show with a Korean celebrity, Cha Mu-hee, and a Japanese celebrity, Hiro Kurosawa, and they’re all whisked away to a few romantic destinations. The catch? They don’t speak the same language, so they can only communicate through a translator. A couple of the romantic destinations included Banff National Park and Calgary in Alberta, and were filmed on location. It was really cool to see a familiar place be the setting, especially when these shows sometimes feel like it takes place in another world.
All in all, I think it was a fun watch! I was hoping they would’ve had the main character go to therapy at some point in the show, but I also understand that mental health is still somewhat stigmatized in that part of the world, so they handled the subject the best they could. I couldn’t nail down the genre they were going for because it had a little bit of everything. Romance, comedy, drama, a bit of horror. However, it was very compelling and I couldn’t stop watching!
You can stream Can This Love Be Translated? on Netflix.
