YORKTON, Sask. — A Yorkton church is opening its doors this Thanksgiving weekend to offer a free community meal for anyone looking for companionship or support during the holiday.
St. Gerard Parish will host a Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Oct. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the parish's main hall. The event is intended for anyone who may not be able to afford a holiday meal or who simply does not want to spend Thanksgiving alone.
The dinner will feature a traditional Thanksgiving menu of ham, perogies, salad and pumpkin pie. Admission is free, although seating is limited to 150 people.
The event comes as many Canadians continue to face higher food and living costs, making holiday celebrations more difficult for some households. Community meals hosted by churches and volunteer organizations have become a way to provide support while also bringing people together during holidays.
Organizers say the dinner is about more than food, offering an opportunity for residents to gather and enjoy fellowship during Thanksgiving.
The Community Thanksgiving Dinner takes place Oct. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the St. Gerard Parish main hall in Yorkton.
