REGINA — Premier Scott Moe says Saskatchewan has deployed resources to Alberta and is ready to provide more if required to assist in responding to the serious incident at CFB Wainwright.
"Our hearts are with all those affected at CFB Wainwright and in the surrounding communities, as well as the first responders and those on the front lines of this tragic incident," said the premier in an X post at 8:47 p.m. Saturday.
Defence Minister David McGuinty said in a televised announcement that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright. In answer to questions from the media, he said a fire is being monitored very closely.
He did not confirm to a reporter that there had been an explosion, saying that it is an "active and delicate situation, soon to become an active and delicate investigation."
"The Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence and partners across the federal government, including the Department of Safety, are working with the government of Alberta and municipal governments to mobilize all necessary support and working through the details of what actually occurred," said McGuinty.
The first responders on the scene and local authorities are doing important work at this time, said McGuinty, adding that the RCMP are also investigating.
When asked if the people in Wainwright were in danger, he said the people of Wainwright are actually helping, with hospital support and firefighting.
McGuinty said he cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory.
He said, "Right now our thoughts are with the families and all who are helping to wrestle this very difficult situation to the ground."
Municipal District of Wainwright stated on social media that a large fire originating near the Canadian Forces Base spread rapidly due to high winds and crossed into the Municipal District of Wainwright No. 61, saying emergency responders were actively assessing the situation and working to protect people, property, and critical infrastructure.
Their latest update says the wildfire is being held at this time and that a fire watch will remain in place to monitor the affected area and address any changing conditions. They continued to ask the public to avoid the incident area and to keep roads clear for emergency personnel and equipment.
"Avoid the area, and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles. Do not travel toward the incident or attempt to view it," stated the municipality's post. It also stated there were no evacuation plans at this time.
The municipality has established an emergency coordination centre, and is asking the public to refrain from visiting the Wainwright Health Centre unless requiring immediate critical care.
On its website, the Town of Wainwright says the base is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre (CMTC), the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre (3 CDTC), and approximately 12 lodger units. It is boasted as the preferred training ground for the Army’s field force units in Western Canada, states the website.
