EDMONTON, Alta. – Early results in the Alberta referendum are giving Option One – the option to remain in Canada – a strong early lead.
With 21 per cent of the vote counted on Question 10, Option One has 788,679 votes compared to 242,855 for the option for Alberta to hold an independence referendum. Percentage-wise it is roughly a 77 to 23 per cent split in favour of Option One.
Counting is still going on for the nine other referendum questions but so far on question one, a lead is being reported for the option in support of the Government of Alberta taking increased control over immigration for the purposes of decreasing immigration to more sustainable levels, prioritizing economic migration and giving Albertans first priority on new employment opportunities.
Counting was delayed until well past 10 p.m. due to delayed openings at a number of polling stations across Alberta on Monday.
