Every year, I tell myself the same thing: I am going to be organized this Halloween. I am going to buy the candy early, make sure we have enough for all the little ghosts and goblins who show up at our door, and avoid that last-minute panic when everyone else in town is also trying to find a bag of chocolate bars.
Sounds like a great plan, right? What could possibly go wrong?
Well, apparently, I forgot to factor in one very important detail. I have absolutely no self-control when there is a bowl of candy sitting on my kitchen counter.
You want to buy the candy early because you don’t want to be that house scrambling around on Halloween afternoon, hoping the store still has something left. You want to be prepared! Responsible! The kind of person who has their Halloween candy ready to go days in advance.
But then you bring it home.
You put it in a nice bowl on the counter, and suddenly, every time you walk through the kitchen, it’s calling your name. You don’t even have to be hungry. You could have just finished supper, and somehow, that little chocolate bar looks like the perfect thing to have.
And then you tell yourself, “It’s fine. I’ll just have one.”
We all know how that goes.
Now, yes, you could keep the candy in its original packaging and hide it away in a closet until the big night. Out of sight, out of mind, right? Except now you have to remember where you hid it, and you still need enough willpower not to go digging through the closet looking for a little treat. At that point, you’re basically playing hide-and-seek with your own snacks.
We had a great bowl of Halloween candy and chocolate sitting on our counter. It looked festive. We were prepared. We were ready for Halloween!
Now we have a great bowl of just candy.
No more chocolate.
Whoops.
I guess the good news is that we still have candy for the trick-or-treaters. The bad news is that if Halloween were tomorrow, the neighbourhood kids would be getting a slightly different selection than originally planned.
So, if you’re thinking about buying your Halloween candy early this year, learn from my experience. Buy it early if you want to be organized, but maybe hide it somewhere inconvenient. Somewhere you won’t casually wander past it 47 times a day.
Or just wait until the last minute like everyone else.
Because apparently, the scariest thing about Halloween isn’t the costumes, the haunted houses, or the creepy decorations.
It’s me, standing in my kitchen, eating the trick-or-treaters’ chocolate one little bar at a time.
Happy Halloween! 🎃
