STURGIS, Sask. — The Sturgis 9-1-1 team played once again in the Saskatchewan Senior Field Lacrosse League. The league consists of five teams, with four from Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert, and the small-town team from Sturgis.
“The provincial championship was held in Prince Albert, with all five teams competing to host the Harvest Cup. Sturgis' first opponent was the Moose Jaw Tommy Guns. The game started out close, but ultimately Sturgis was able to find a rhythm and win 13-6. Later in the day, Sturgis would face off against the reigning champions, Prince Albert Prairie Dogs. In this game, everything clicked and Sturgis cruised to an 18-6 victory. That ended regular play with Sturgis winning the tiebreaker formula to claim first place heading into championship Sunday. They would then face Moose Jaw again in the semifinal with a spot in the Harvest Cup on the line. Sturgis came out on a mission and easily won 20-3, sending them to the finals where they would once again face the Prince Albert Prairie Dogs. This game was a lot closer, with Sturgis unable to capitalize on key opportunities. They found themselves in a tight match until ultimately breaking free in the second half to cruise to a 9-3 victory and the Harvest Cup championship. It was the team's second Harvest Cup championship win,” said Shae Peterson.
“This was probably the best team we’ve suited up since restarting the 9-1-1 program, and the boys were able to click at the right time and everything just seemed to go our way. We had one goal in mind, and that was to win. Being the only small-town team, it always feels good to beat the city! And as Coach Cameron always told us, ‘keep pounding nails,’ and we sure did, outscoring our opponents 60-17 over the course of the four games on the weekend. I’m so proud of the team and hope we can run it back next year,” concluded Peterson.
