Usually, a provincial budget is shrouded in mystery and secrecy, until the finance minister rises in the house to deliver the budget after 2 o’clock in the afternoon.
This year is a little different. In the on-going battle with teachers to decide how and where to spend money to make improvements in classrooms, the premier let a few things slip.
The government is going to proclaim that this is the largest education budget increase in Saskatchewan’s history.
Premier Scott Moe said two weeks ago the government was pouring more into education to address “class size” and “class complexity” throughout the province.
Today you will hear again about the 180 million dollars in increased funding to education, representing a nine percent increase for a total of 2.2 billion dollars. 45 million of that will be for classroom support, in other words “class size, and class complexity”.
Teachers are staging a one day provincewide strike today, and you can expect some of them will be outside the legislature while the budget is being delivered.
Another part of the budget released by the Sask Party Government was at the recent SARM convention in Regina. The premier said there would be an increase to revenue sharing with municipalities.
The rest of the budget remains under wraps and will be released this afternoon.
