Prairie Mountain Health (PMH) has been ordered by the Province of Manitoba to slash for-profit nursing agency costs by 15 per cent by March of 2026.
Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara noted in a release Wednesday that it’s part of a system-wide effort to refocus funding on nurses in the public system.
She says the province is looking to invest in publicly-funded health care, while encouraging nurses to join the public system.
The minister says PMH has been forced to overspend on private nursing agencies over the years, blaming the previous Progressive Conservative government for reducing services in the region, including firing nurses and closing emergency rooms.
