Saskatchewan’s minimum wage will see an increase this year, and for the next two years.
On October 1st, 2022, minimum wage will go up to 13-dollars an hour. Currently, it’s $11.81 – the lowest in Canada.
In a news release, the province also announced next year, it will increase to 14 dollars, then again in 2024 to 15 dollars.
“World events continue to put upward pressure on the cost of living in Saskatchewan and across Canada,” Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said in the release. “Our government is committed to ensuring life is affordable for our low-income residents by increasing the minimum wage over the next three years. This commitment to affordability will support Saskatchewan workers, and ensure Saskatchewan is the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”
The province also says the increase is a market-based adjustment, different from their traditional indexation formula, and it will reflect a move to more closely align workers’ salaries with changing market forces.
The Opposition NDP have previously called on the government to increase the minimum wage.
