There’s been a bit of an alarming trend in the City of Yorkton.
Between January and August there have been 21 water main breaks and 31 water service leaks. Mayor Mitch Hippsley says compared to last year for the same period there were 6 water main breaks and 46 water service leaks.
“Water main breaks are caused by stress cracks in the pipe due to frost and movement usually during spring. However, breaks are becoming more consistent, even now throughout the summer months. A water service leak is caused by a combination of aging service lines…and the ground movement in and around the pipes over time.” Hippsley explained while also mentioning some of the underground infrastructure is 70-years-old.
“Every year, we have been working towards upgrading our aging underground infrastructure under our Water Main Replacement Program, and of course this takes time and money.” he added.
The city’s water and sewer department have been responding to repair these breaks.
Free Parking
There will be some free parking in select areas of downtown Yorkton.
Mayor Hippsley notes this only applies to city owned lots from August 29th to September 2nd.
Free parking locations include the four multi-space, pay station parking lots and a permeant parking lots located on Myrtle, Betts, First and Second Avenues.
Curb parking throughout the downtown core will still have the two hour limit.
