Saskatchewan RCMP says the number of homicides in its jurisdiction has decreased so far this year compared to the same period in 2024.
From January 1 to July 15, RCMP reported 13 homicide files involving 13 victims, down from 23 homicides during the same time frame last year.
RCMP say four of the 13 files this year remain under investigation while nine have been solved.
The drop in numbers comes after a record-setting 2024 in which Saskatchewan RCMP reported 39 homicide files with 41 victims — the highest number of homicide files ever recorded in the province’s RCMP jurisdiction. That was a 26 per cent increase in files and a 32 per cent rise in victims over 2023.
The number of victims in 2024 was the second-highest recorded, following 2022, when 43 victims were reported, including all victims of the mass casualty event in James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon, Sask.
Saskatchewan RCMP says it also supported the File Hills First Nations Police Service with two homicide investigations so far in 2025 involving five victims. All five cases have been solved.
Between 2015 and July 2025, Saskatchewan RCMP has an overall clearance rate of 85 per cent for homicide investigations. By comparison, the national clearance rate for police services across Canada between 2020 and 2024 was 72 per cent.
“The Saskatchewan RCMP investigates homicides or suspected homicides using all resources, techniques and avenues available to them,” said Insp. Ashley St. Germaine, senior investigative officer with the Major Crimes Branch.
“Those cases that aren’t solved remain open and investigators continue to actively and diligently work on them.”
Saskatchewan RCMP says the information was released as part of its broader 2024 crime statistics and yearly trends report. Statistics Canada also calculates and releases a Crime Severity Index each year, which measures the volume and seriousness of police-reported crime across jurisdictions.
