Hey everyone! I’m still on my Marvel catch-up, and I just wrapped up the mini-series Echo. It had been a while since we last saw Maya Lopez on screen, she was last seen in Hawkeye three years earlier. What makes Maya so unique is that she’s Indigenous, deaf, and an amputee…and the amazing Alaqua Cox who plays her, shares all those experiences in real life. That authenticity really adds something special to the show.
If you’re used to non-stop action from Marvel, Echo might just surprise you. Sure, the fight scenes are awesome, but the show is actually super character-driven. I loved all the flashbacks to the strong women in Maya’s lineage. It was such a clever and touching way to connect the past and present. There are also plenty of familiar faces to spot! I had so much fun seeing Graham Greene (RIP king) and Tantoo Cardinal playing a couple again, quite the throwback to Dances With Wolves. And, as a Twilight fan, also seeing Graham Greene (Harry Clearwater) and Chaske Spencer (Sam Uley) in the same show was just the cherry on top. They were both fantastic! I do have to give a shoutout to the actor who plays Biscuits in Echo, Cody Lightning. Biscuits was just such a sweet and funny character and was my favourite in the show, besides Maya of course.
I was surprised when I looked up Echo on IMDb and saw it only has a 5.9/10 rating. Honestly, I’d give it at least an 8! The story is solid, the characters are great, and I loved how the show explored how our past shapes who we are today, whether we’re aware of it or not. If you’ve got an afternoon free, give Echo a watch! Just a quick heads up though, it is rated MA, so it’s not for the little ones. But if you’re looking for a Marvel series with heart, depth, and a fresh perspective, then this one’s definitely worth your time.
Let me know if you watch it. I’d love to hear what you think!
