CANORA – On a near perfect late summer day, Dilly and Dally, a pair of Osprey from just outside Canora, flew high and far after recovering from their injuries.
The two were discovered on the August long weekend just outside the Canora Water Treatment Plant by Corey Heshka, Town of Canora employee, after their nest had fallen down to the ground. Heshka quickly contacted Mary Huebert of Majestic Raptor Rehab in Canora.
“One had a lung contusion and a heart murmur,” said Huebert, “and the other suffered a fractured femur in the fall.”
The birds were estimated to be about a month old at the time they were discovered, and were transported to Saskatoon where they were treated by the U of S exotics team and spent about a month recovering from their injuries.
On Sept. 8, they were returned to Majestic Raptor Rehab.
“They had learn to fly again,” said Huebert. “Fortunately we have plenty of room for them at our facility.”
Osprey typically have a five to six-foot wingspan. Huebert said the pair have been eating well, and were right around the average Osprey weight at the time of their release.
Osprey and other injured raptors are, whenever possible, released close to where they were found to give them at least somewhat familiar surroundings. Dilly and Dally were released outside the Canora Water Treatment Plant.
Huebert said a number of people played important roles in helping these birds get healthy and back to the wild.
“Corey Heshka took the time to let me know he had found them after the nest came down. SaskPower did their part by grounding the lines to help release the osprey chicks. The U of S exotic team treated their injuries and help them recover.”
Huebert said Majestic Raptor Rehab keeps in touch with the Wildlife Rescue Society of Saskatchewan to receive notification of any raptors in need of rehabilitation.
She urges anyone who finds an injured raptor to follow Corey Heshka’s example and bring it in to Majestic Raptor Rehab or give her a call at 306-563-7252.
