The Swan Valley Stampeders opened their MJHL season with a statement comeback, rallying from a three-goal deficit to defeat the Dauphin Kings 6-3 on Friday night at Swan River Centennial Arena.
The Kings built a 2-0 first-period lead on goals from Emrick Gagnon and Rylan Gage, before Madden Murray added another late in the second to make it 3-0. Bennett Muller finally got Swan Valley on the board, cutting the deficit to two after 40 minutes.
The third period, however, belonged entirely to the Stampeders. Ben Groome started the surge just over three minutes in, followed by quick goals from Riley Fequet and Crosby Harrison—Harrison’s marker standing as the game-winner—as Swan Valley stormed ahead for the first time. Ethan MacTavish and Darren Hunt added insurance late to seal the 6-3 win.
The line of Groome, MacTavish, and Fequet combined for nine points on the night, each posting a goal and two assists.
The two teams will square off again Saturday night in Dauphin, with puck drop set for 7:00 PM at Credit Union Place.
Elsewhere, the Waywayseecappo Wolverines also opened their season with a win, knocking off the Virden Oil Capitals 4-2. Mikey Thomas scored the eventual game-winner midway through the second period, while goaltender Jase Wareham was solid with 34 saves on 36 shots. The clubs will meet again Saturday in Virden.
