YORKTON – A 22-year-old man from Manitoba is facing multiple charges after a series of incidents in Yorkton on Sept. 17 that ended with him being struck by a police vehicle and injured.
According to Saskatchewan RCMP, the situation started at about 4:51 p.m. on Sept. 17 when officers responded to a report of a theft at a business on Broadway Street. The suspect was reported to have thrown rocks at a store employee before fleeing with a second male.
Just minutes later, at around 5:03 p.m., police received another call reporting that two males matching the same description were throwing rocks at dogs and had threatened a citizen with bear spray. Officers in the area located the two suspects, who then fled in separate directions.
Police pursued the 22-year-old man into a grassy area, with one officer on foot and another in a police vehicle. During the pursuit, the man was hit by the police vehicle and fell to the ground.
Police officers called EMS and drove the 22-year-old male to the hospital, where his injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening.
Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is now investigating the circumstances of the in-custody injury.
Additionally, the RCMP has several internal and external review processes that ensure our police officers are accountable for all police intervention occurrences. In this instance, an internal investigation by professional standards has been launched by the Saskatchewan RCMP.
The man, from Mallard, Man., is charged with possession of property obtained by crime, uttering a threat, and resisting arrest. He is scheduled to appear in Yorkton court on Oct. 27.
The second male, a 20-year-old Yorkton man, is charged with theft under $5,000, assault, uttering threats, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, resisting a police officer, and failing to comply with a probation order. He was remanded in custody until his appearance in court on Sept. 23.
