The Manitoba Junior Hockey League has kicked off the 2025-26 season with plenty of energy, and Commissioner Kevin Saurette says the early weeks have gone smoothly.
“It’s always an exciting time of year,” Saurette said. “Opening weekend brings home openers, big crowds, and a lot of excitement. I think parity is going to be another strong point in the MJHL this year.”
This season also marks the first under a new NCAA ruling, which has affected rosters across the league. “We’ve seen a lot of high-end kids back in the league, including Division I committed players, along with WHL prospects and signed players. It’s going to be an exciting season,” he said.
Player development remains a central focus. “Our goal is to provide opportunities for players to advance to higher levels—whether it’s the WHL, NCAA, U Sports, or professional hockey. Our league motto hasn’t changed: play here, go anywhere,” Saurette said.
Fans have plenty to look forward to beyond regular-season games, including the Western All-Star Challenge in Martensville, Saskatchewan.
The MJHL also emphasizes community involvement.
“Players are role models and ambassadors. Most teams aim for a thousand hours of community work each year. It’s incredibly important for the league and inspiring for the kids in our communities,” he said.
With strong competition, talented rosters, and a commitment to both player development and community engagement, Saurette says the MJHL is ready for an exciting season.
