CANORA —There is a longstanding tradition among farmers where neighbours step up to help their neighbours during hard times, and that was again the case recently on the Miles Chaikowski farm north of Canora. After suffering a stroke on July 5, Miles was unable to harvest the crop and continues to recuperate in Yorkton.
Following up on information and a photograph provided by an anonymous source, Canora Courier learned that, on. Sept. 23, a crew of volunteering friends from the surrounding area with four combines and three trucks took off the Chaikowski crop in a couple of hours.
“They were remarkably fast,” said Miles’ wife Lorelei. “That normally takes two or three days for Miles.”
Shaun Sliva had looked after the swathing.
For the most part, the volunteers were organized by Dave Wyonzek, who was doing the trucking along with Ken Wyonzek and Wayne Tratch.
Michael (‘Rowdy’) Rakochy operated the combine provided by Zach and Lori Rakochy. Others running the combines at various times included: Shaun Sliva, Terry Ripa, Steven Wyonzek and Ivan Witzko.
Leonard Kosar and Dave Wyonzek looked after co-ordinating things in the yard, where they had two augers going into two bins because four combines can get a lot of crop off in a hurry.
“It gave me a good feeling,” said Miles Chaikowski, speaking on the phone from Yorkton. “I was wondering when I was going to do the harvesting. I thought it might have to wait until spring.”
“I really appreciate it. I’ll have to think of something nice I can do for them.”
“We’re humbled, to say the least,” added Lorelei. “With everything negative going on in the world today, it’s a true testimony of God’s grace that there’s still people in the world thinking of helping other people.”
Miles and Lorelei said there were actually numerous other friends who volunteered to help out with the harvest operation if needed, further evidence that there are still a lot of good people out there.
