YORKTON — The Saskatchewan NDP is calling on the provincial government to make good on its long-standing promise to replace the Yorkton Regional Health Centre.
Speaking in Yorkton Rural and Remote Health Critic Jarred Clarke said the lack of any mention of a new hospital in the recent throne speech was “deeply disappointing” and a sign that the Sask. Party government has no clear plan to address the region’s health care needs.
“For 18 years, the Sask. Party has promised to replace the Yorkton Regional Health Centre,” Clarke said. “They’ve said it’s on the way and that planning is underway. But here we are, nearly two decades later, and still no shovel in the ground.”
Clarke said the existing facility is outdated and overcrowded and that staff continue to work under challenging conditions without the resources or infrastructure they need.
The NDP says if elected, it will move ahead with plans to build a new hospital in Yorkton, while also investing in surrounding infrastructure including housing and training for health-care workers, as well as upgrades to water and wastewater systems.
Jobs and Economy Critic Aleana Young, the party’s jobs and economy critic, said a new hospital would not only improve access to care but also boost Yorkton’s long-term growth.
“When a government invests in critical infrastructure like hospitals, it’s not just about health care,” Young said. “It’s about economic opportunity — construction creates jobs, modern facilities attract doctors, and new families move in.”
