REGINA — Expect to see people wearing a lot of Green and White in Saskatchewan on Friday.
The Saskatchewan Legislature was in a football mood on Thursday as it was proclaimed that Friday, Nov. 7 would be Green and White Day in Saskatchewan. As part of the proclamation Saskatchewan residents are being encouraged to wear green Friday in support of the Roughriders.
Premier Scott Moe and Gainer the Gopher signed the proclamation at the Legislature in advance of the Western final between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and BC Lions. Gainer then joined Moe outside to raise the Roughriders flag at the Legislature.
“We know that all of Saskatchewan is very much going to be cheering on the Roughriders this Saturday in the western final as they take on the BC Lions,” Moe said.
“We’re encouraging everybody in the province, everybody across this province to wear green and white tomorrow in support of our beloved Saskatchewan Roughriders. It’s been such an exciting year for the Roughriders with so much good news to share throughout the season. Beginning next season tailgating as we announced will be permitted at Riders games, elevating that experience to an even higher level, giving Riders fans a new way to watch and participate in the game day, activities and support our Saskatchewan Roughriders team. Just announced last week, a great announcement in 2027 hours our Saskatchewan Roughriders are going to have the privilege of hosting the Grey Cup at Mosaic Stadium, bringing football fans across the country and dare I say across the continent right here to Regina, Saskatchewan and I trust there’s Saskatchewan Roughriders will be in that game as well. The CFL is very strong today, thankfully to the leadership of all the organizations to are part of that league. The spirit of Rider Pride is very strong, and Saskatchewan people are ready to support their team this weekend and certainly support our beloved Roughriders into next season.”
When reporters asked what was so special about this season that they are dedicating a day to the Green and White, Moe responded “we’re winning. And we don’t intend on quitting winning.”
Moe also saw similarities to the Toronto Blue Jays and their World Series team in that they came together as a team and supported one another. “You see that with the Saskatchewan Roughriders this particular season. You see the offensive line guys backing one another up… you see the defensive line guys taking that second away of the opposition quarterbacks all year.”
As for how Gainer felt about the occasion at the Legislature, he said (as translated by Moe): “It takes the most popular, and most beloved mascot in the CFL to come to legislature to inject a little bit of fun and to bring everyone together in support our Saskatchewan Roughriders as they head towards the Western final this weekend.”
