SASKATOON – As the first week of November falls off the calendar, it turns out that Old Man Winter has once again shown his cards and dealt Saskatchewan a white blanket of snowfall.
Most parts of the province started seeing snow begin to fall on Thursday, Nov. 6 and the wet and white stuff continued to fly into the evening hours.
James Colangelo, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, says the most affected part of the province was north of the city of Saskatoon.
"So the most snowfall was actually north of Saskatoon, kind of around that Meadow Lake, Prince Albert area," he pointed out. "That area got anywhere from six or seven centimeters up to around 10 or 11. I've also got a report here of 11.4 centimeters in Holbein. From there, we received eight centimeters in Meadow Lake and seven centimeters in Prince Albert. The further south you go from there, the snowfall actually drops off quite drastically. I'm seeing here, Saskatoon, that area likely got between one to three centimeters. So, it does drop off quite drastically as you move further south."
Colangelo says that a system coming in through the southern portion of the province may result in some new snowfall for some communities heading into the weekend.
"It looks like kind of the south portion of the province, anywhere from Leader, Kindersley, and southeast towards kind of the Weyburn area; that area could see maybe five, maybe up to eight centimeters or so for that system coming in for tonight and into tomorrow," he advised. "So, we'd say just keep an eye on that. It looks to just kind of skirt, just sneak into Regina a little bit."
Other parts of the province saw a thin blanket of snowfall which is typical for this time of year. Colangelo says that Saskatchewan residents may want to take notice of any possible new systems beginning to move in today and into tonight in different parts of Saskatchewan. That said, he doesn't expect anything too drastic as we head into the weekend.
"Currently, there may be some that are issued based on this new system that's moving in today and tonight," he said. "Not expecting anything at the moment, but definitely keep an eye on things in case they get worse in terms of when we'll be seeing and if we'll be seeing that snowfall. We issue snowfall warnings for getting snowfall 10 centimeters or greater in less than 12 hours. And we're not expecting that for anywhere in the next couple of days here."
