CANORA – The Canora Composite School Cougars junior girls volleyball black team took on their Highway 5 rivals from Kamsack on Oct. 28 in Canora.
The first set opened with the two teams battling back and forth to a 6-6 tie. But then the tide turned as the Cougars rattled of 16 straight points and went on to take the set by 22-12.
The visitors from Kamsack took an early 5-1 lead in the second set, but that didn’t last long. The Cougars tied the score at 8-8, which was only the beginning of a set that was pretty much as tight as it could possibly be. After a dozen different ties, the set was still deadlocked at 24-24. A determined Kamsack squad then scored the final two point for a 26-24 win, to tie the proceedings at one set apiece.
The third and deciding set saw the Spartans race out to an early 9-2 lead. Canora recovered and played the set relatively even until the score was 19-13 in favour of the visitors. But the Cougars were not to be denied, outscored Kamsack 12-2 the rest of the way for well-deserved a 25-21 win to take the match, two sets to one.
For conference and district playoffs, the black and red teams were combined into one team to represent the Cougars,
Conferences were held in Preeceville on Oct. 21. Eight teams competed in a single elimination tournament with the top two moving on to districts, according to Cougars Coach Dean Turchinetz.
“The Cougars won their first two games and advanced to the Conference final versus Preeceville. The ladies fought hard but came up short in that game, but still advanced to Districts as the number two team in the conference.”
Districts were played on the first weekend of November at Sacred Heart High School in Yorkton, where the format changed to a round robin format with teams placed in pools with three other teams.
Canora was in a pool with Yorkton Regional High School, Langenberg and Sacred Heart High School.
“After tough games versus YRHS and Langenburg, the ladies rallied for a win versus Sacred Heart High School,” said Turchinetz. “I was very impressed with their resilience and ability to rally back in the Sacred Heart game after not getting the outcome they wanted from the first two games.
“I am very proud of how they came together as a team, improved together and supported each other this season. The future for junior volleyball at CCS is bright!”
