Now that it’s officially the holiday season, I thought it was the perfect time to catch up on some holiday movies that everyone seems to love, but that I’ve never actually seen! After hearing about the recent passing of the wonderful Diane Keaton, I felt extra motivated to finally watch The Family Stone.
You can stream The Family Stone on Disney+.
I pressed play without knowing much about the storyline, but I have to say, I was impressed just by the opening credits. This movie is packed with famous faces: Diane Keaton, Dermot Mulroney, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel McAdams, Luke Wilson, Claire Danes, Craig T. Nelson, and even Elizabeth Reaser (aka Esme from Twilight). With such an all-star lineup, I was optimistic and excited to see what all the fuss was about.
But I have to be honest. I didn’t love it. Don’t get me wrong, the actors all did a great job in their roles, but I found a lot of the main characters really hard to like. The only ones I genuinely enjoyed were Thad and his partner Patrick (played by Tyrone Giordano and Brian J. White), and Susannah (Elisabeth Reaser). The rest? Not so much! I know that families can be complicated and everyone has their flaws, but these characters made it tough for me to root for them. And then, without giving anything away, there’s a bit of a (for lack of a better word) “switcheroo” at the end involving the next Christmas that just left me feeling ooky. It was definitely not what I expected!
Even though The Family Stone wasn’t quite my cup of tea, my love for Diane Keaton is as strong as ever. So, to keep the Diane vibes going, I watched Mad Money next (not a Christmas movie, but SO much fun and really funny).
You can stream Mad Money on Netflix.
If you have a favourite Diane Keaton movie, I’d love to hear what it is and what you love about it! And who knows? Maybe you might enjoy The Family Stone. You won’t know unless you watch!
