STURGIS — The Sturgis Composite School junior girls and boys hosted a basketball home tournament on Dec. 5 and 6, with four teams participating.
The junior girls tournament included teams from Kamsack, Hudson Bay, Melville and the host team, Sturgis. The Sturgis team took on all teams but came up short each time, losing all three games.
Members of the Sturgis Composite School junior girls’ basketball team were Eva Romanchuk, Allie Babiuk, Lindy Romanchuk, Jade Beatty, Amelia Maier, Lakyn Seerey and Lily Beatty, with Nathan Hrynchyshyn as coach. Melville Composite School won the girls’ tournament.
“We had a short bench with players being out due to illness,” said Nathan Hrynchyshyn (coach). “We have a very young team, and this year is a rebuilding year for both junior teams. The focus of junior ball is for players to learn basic skills, build their own techniques, get on the court to play, and have fun,” he stated.
The junior boys also struggled, losing all of their games. Other teams entered in the junior boys tournament included Kamsack, Hudson Bay, Sacred Heart and the host team, Sturgis.
Members of the Sturgis Composite School junior boys’ basketball team were Derwin Boucher, Cooper Stack, Kolton Fortin, CJ Tomas, Riley Melnick-Kaytor, Jayden Poworoznyk-Bates, Liam Aspe, Keltyn Konkel, Austin Jansen and Koy Babiuk. Nathan Hrynchyshyn was the coach. Sacred Heart School won the boys’ tournament.
