CANORA- A one-day U9 tournament was held at the Canora Civic Centre on Dec. 6, with four teams hitting the ice. In addition to the host Cobras, the other teams making the trip to Canora were: the Churchbridge Imperials, the Yorkton Terriers and the Preeceville Pats.
The round robin portion had each team playing three games, one against every other team.
The host Cobras defeated Preeceville, and suffered losses to Churchbridge and Yorkton.
The Imperials and Terriers tied their game, and each won both of their other contests against Preeceville and Canora.
The Pats were defeated in all three of their round robin games.
That set up the A final, where Churchbridge came out on top over Yorkton.
In the B final, the Cobras earned another win over the Pats to claim the B championship.
Cobras Coach Parker Rice said he was pleased with the competitiveness shown by all four teams, creating, “an enjoyable day of hockey.”
With two wins and two losses on the day, Rice said Cobras players are showing real signs of growth early in the season.
“Our kids are focussing on team play so we emphasize passing and trying to spread the points around,” said Rice. “Our passing got better and better every game.”
Spectators at the game may have noticed that several Canora players were playing for the Preeceville team, an example of teams helping each other out in times of need.
“We ended up playing the Preeceville team twice and a sickness was going through their team, so they only had five players,” said Rice. “We typically have around 17 players so we lent them five players so they could have another line.”
Rice said the Cobras had only been on the ice for one game prior to the tournament.
“We are looking better and better each game,” he said. “I have really enjoyed coaching the U9 team. I have been an assistant coach for years so I know all the kids quite well which makes things easier.
“From what we have seen so far this year our team is showing a lot of determination to play hard and keep learning, so we should have a lot of success this year.”
