PREECEVILLE — "As we step into the gentle hush of Advent, the world around us feels both familiar and full of wonder", stated Reverend David Mudadzi of the Preeceville and Surgis United Churches.
"The snow dusts our fields and streets, the lights twinkle on our trees, and our hearts turn toward the stable in Bethlehem. Advent isn’t just a countdown to Christmas; it’s a holy invitation to center our lives on Jesus Christ, the Light of the world, who came to chase away our darkness. In the Gospel of John, we read these beautiful words: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it” (John 1:5). Jesus, born as a tiny baby in a simple manger, brings hope not because everything is perfect, but because He is with us in every imperfect moment.
"This season, our churches in Preeceville and Sturgis open wide their doors as places to meet Jesus right where we are. We know the holidays can bring joy, like laughter around a family table or the warmth of old carols. But they can also stir up pain, the quiet ache of missing loved ones, the loneliness of an empty chair, or the burden of worries that won’t let go. That’s why Advent points us straight to Christ, who understands our hurts because He walked through them Himself. He wept at the tomb of Lazarus, felt the sting of betrayal in the garden, and carried the cross for us all. In Jesus, we find a Savior who doesn’t ignore our tears; He gathers them up and turns them into songs of praise.
"One special way we’re making space for this truth is through our Blue Christmas Service. It’s a tender time set aside for anyone feeling blue during the holidays. Maybe you’ve lost someone dear this year, or you’re facing health struggles that make the season feel heavy. Perhaps family tensions run deep, or the world just seems too noisy and cold. Jesus sees you, friends. He came for the brokenhearted, just as He promises in Isaiah 61:1: “He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives.” On Tuesday, December 16, at 7 p.m., join us at Grace United Church in Sturgis for an evening wrapped in Christ’s comfort. We’ll light candles to remember those we’ve lost and to celebrate the lives that still shine bright. Soft hymns will fill the air, prayers will lift our sorrows to the One who holds them, and we’ll share moments of quiet where Jesus can speak peace into our souls. There’s no need to sign up or dress up, just come as you are. In this simple gathering, we’ll discover how Christ meets us in the shadows, whispering, “I am here. I am enough.”
"As Advent draws us deeper into the story of Jesus, we prepare our hearts for the miracle of Christmas Eve, the night when heaven touched earth in the cry of a newborn King. Think of it: God, the Creator of stars and seas, chose to enter our messy world as a helpless child, born to an ordinary young couple in a borrowed stable. This is the heart of Christmas: not the gifts under the tree, but the Gift on the manger’s hay. Jesus came to be our Emmanuel, God with us, bridging the gap between heaven and our everyday lives. He didn’t come for the perfect; He came for you and me, right in our need.
"Our Preeceville-Sturgis United Church of Canada family is excited to celebrate this holy birth with you on Christmas Eve, December 24. We have two services designed to help you encounter Christ in fresh ways:
"At Trinity United Church in Preeceville, starting at 6:30 p.m., families and friends of all ages are welcome for a joyful candlelight service. We’ll sing beloved carols like “Away in a Manger” and “Silent Night,” hear the timeless story of Jesus’ birth from Luke’s Gospel, and light candles that remind us of the Star of Bethlehem guiding us to the Saviour. It’s an early-evening gathering perfect for little ones whose eyes light up at the wonder of it all, or for anyone craving a cozy time to reflect on how Jesus’ light warms even the coldest night.
"Then, at Grace United Church in Sturgis, we gather at 8 p.m. for a more intimate service of lessons and carols. As the clock edges toward midnight, we’ll read scriptures that unfold the promise of the Messiah, from the prophecies of old to the angels’ song over the hills. Candles will glow like stars, and our voices will join in praise, drawing us closer to the Christ child who sleeps in the hay. It’s a moment to let the peace of Jesus settle deep, washing over any lingering blues from earlier in the season.
"These services aren’t just traditions; they’re doorways to meet Jesus anew. As we sing and pray, may we hear His voice saying, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). In the flicker of candlelight, we’ll see how the baby in the manger grew to be the Saviour on the cross and the risen Lord who lives in our hearts today.
"Beloved community of Preeceville and District, as your ministers, we walk this Advent path with you, eyes fixed on Christ, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the Light that never fades. We invite you to lean into these gatherings: Let Blue Christmas hold your grief in Jesus’ gentle hands. Let Christmas Eve fill you with the awe of His arrival. And in the days between, carve out quiet spots to read the Gospels, to pray simple words like “Jesus, be near,” or to reach out to a neighbor with a kind hello. Christ is at the centre of it all, our hope, our healer, our joy.
"This Christmas, may the Christ who came as a baby wrap you in His endless love. May His peace, which passes all understanding, guard your hearts. And may the Holy Spirit kindle in us a fire that warms our homes, our churches, and our world.
"Merry Christmas to you and your family. With prayers and blessings in the name of Jesus Christ." concluded Mugadzi.
