The Saskatchewan Roughriders have taken another step toward keeping their defensive core intact, re-signing American defensive back DaMarcus Fields to a two-year contract extension.
Fields has quietly become one of the most reliable fixtures on the Riders’ back end since arriving in Riderville in 2024.
Since joining the Green and White, the 6-foot, 200-pound Taylor, Texas, product has done nothing but show up, play every week, and make plays. Fields has suited up for all 36 regular-season games since his arrival, plus two playoff games as a rookie in 2024. Last season, he delivered his best CFL campaign yet, putting up career highs across the board:
- 57 defensive tackles
- 11 special teams tackles
- 2 interceptions
- 8 pass knockdowns — the most on the team
He also finished third on the Riders in total defensive plays, and when the stage got bigger, Fields didn’t fade. He started both the Western Final and the 112th Grey Cup, adding five defensive tackles and a special teams stop in the postseason.
Before his CFL career took off, Fields spent time in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints—cracking the roster as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and appearing in two regular-season games. He later joined Washington’s practice squad, where he remained through the 2023 preseason.
His résumé at Texas Tech hinted that a productive pro career was coming. Over 54 collegiate games and 50 starts, Fields piled up 224 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, four interceptions, and 45 passes defended—good for second in the nation during his time in Lubbock. He earned multiple All-Big 12 honours and capped his college career with an invite to the East-West Shrine Bowl.
Now, the Riders are betting on that consistency and big-game experience for two more seasons.
