KAMSACK — A resident of Eaglestone Lodge in Kamsack has donated two dozen hand-knitted mittens to the students of Victoria School in Kamsack.
Mary Welykholowa, who has been a resident of the lodge for four years, donated a box of colourful mittens Feb. 3, when three Grade 3 students collected them. Visiting her were Annie Custaloe, Kendra Shukin and Rayelle Babalola, who found her sitting in her chair knitting.
Welykholowa, who will be celebrating her 100th birthday on Sept. 6, said she began crocheting at age nine and began knitting when she was 15 years old.
She had donated seven dozen mittens to the school four years ago and said she began knitting these mittens after Christmas, using not only her own yarn, but yarn that had been donated to her for the project.
Uncertain how much longer she will be able to knit, Welykholowa said that her eyesight has diminished and her fingers are losing the ability to knit.
The mittens are kept at the school and ready for use during cold weather by students who have lost or forgotten their gloves or mittens.
